A recurring feature of Kotrč’s work is his creation of smaller-scale objects constructed from meticulously cut pieces of antique picture frames. Over time, he discovered the potential of these objects for short video presentations, showcasing them rotating around their axis. While this type of object rotation is commonly used in advertising to reveal all sides of a product, Kotrč’s videos take on a unique quality, appearing more like 3D-generated animations than actual footage of real objects.
At the heart of the exhibition is a translucent paper object – a material the artist often uses for painting. This time, however, it serves as a projection surface for a video loop featuring an object rotating slightly off its axis. Through this installation, the principle of rotation is multiplied: not only in the motion of the video but also in the infinite loop of the projection itself and the axially symmetrical construction of the paper object, which inherently contains the element of rotation.
Other components of the exhibition include assemblage-like wall objects, constructed from fragments of picture frames combined with materials such as padded textiles. These works reference the furniture-like qualities of the objects while subtly echoing the themes of rotation and off-axis motion. The interplay of materials and forms invites viewers to explore the boundaries between stillness and movement, balance and disarray, within the conceptual framework of Off Axis.
