Ondřej Kotrč is a Czech intermedial artist. While his artistic practice embraces a wide range of procedures, approaches, and strategies, the foundation of his work is deeply rooted in the exploration of painting and its relationship to the object. His highly sensual works serve as a reference point for the evolving canons of the painting medium, questioning its fundamental characteristics. By systematically nullifying traditional painting techniques, he alienates the medium from its own history, favoring narratives drawn from subcultural contexts. Kotrč’s work intuitively yet precisely engages with the contemporary pseudorealist philosophy of painting, addressing themes such as the perception of the painting, its properties as both a physical and virtual entity and its role as a commercial commodity.

He draws inspiration from situations, topics, or phenomena observed in his daily life or that personally affect him. These elements are articulated in his works in ways that resist definitive interpretation, creating a space for viewers to engage with the pieces on multiple levels. Through a distinctive visual language, Kotrč communicates with the viewer on an emotional level, using the intense visual and aesthetic aspects of his work as a primary tool. Simultaneously, he incorporates humor and light irony, reflecting his relationship with the function of contemporary art itself. A key element of Kotrč's practice is the creative process – the physical act of making, working with materials, and embracing the errors that arise during production.

His work often features elements reminiscent of design or ready-made, yet the craftsmanship and the process of creation remain integral to the final piece, leaving a strong mark on its appearance. This focus also underscores his attention to the formal aspects of his work, regardless of medium or approach. Kotrč frequently incorporates references to other artworks, as well as cultural, historical, or pop-cultural attributes. By deconstructing established structures and detaching elements from their original functions, he places them in entirely new contexts and situations. This approach challenges conventional perceptions and invites viewers to consider familiar ideas from unexpected perspectives.
